Bathroom plumbing repairs for toilets, faucets and showers

Running toilets, dripping faucets and showers that swing hot and cold are fixable, usually in one visit, with parts matched to your fixtures.

What a repair visit covers

Why bathroom plumbing problems should not wait

Bathrooms have more plumbing packed into a small space than almost any other room. Toilets, sinks, tubs and showers each have supply connections, valves and drains, and many of those connections sit behind walls or under floors where a small leak can go unnoticed. A toilet that runs constantly can waste a considerable amount of water, and a slow leak under a vanity or around a toilet base can damage subflooring and ceilings below.

Most bathroom plumbing repairs are straightforward when handled early. Replacing a worn flapper or fill valve stops a running toilet. A new cartridge or washer fixes a dripping faucet. Resetting a toilet on a new wax ring stops leaks at the base. The key is identifying the correct part for your fixture, since faucet and valve cartridges vary widely by manufacturer.

We diagnose the problem, explain the repair and quote a flat price. Common parts are carried on the truck, and brand-specific cartridges are sourced when needed.

Bathroom problems we repair

These are the issues that bring most people to call.

Toilet runs or refills on its own

A worn flapper, a misadjusted float or a failing fill valve lets water leak into the bowl and triggers refills.

Water around the toilet base

A failed wax ring or loose mounting bolts can let water seep under the toilet, which can damage the floor over time.

Dripping faucet or showerhead

Worn cartridges, washers or valve seats allow water to drip even when the handle is fully closed.

Shower temperature swings

Sudden temperature changes when another fixture is used can mean a pressure-balance valve cartridge is worn or clogged.

Low water pressure at one fixture

Clogged aerators, mineral-filled showerheads or a failing valve cartridge can reduce flow at a single fixture.

Slow sink or tub drain

Hair and soap buildup in pop-up assemblies, tub drains and traps are common causes of slow bathroom drains.

How a bathroom repair visit goes

  1. Identify the fixture and problem

We confirm the fixture brand and model and the exact symptom, since the repair and parts depend on both.

  2. Shut off and inspect

Water is shut off at the fixture stop or the main, and the valve, flapper, cartridge or connection is inspected.

  3. Quote the repair

You receive a flat price for the repair, along with a replacement option if the fixture is worn beyond reasonable repair.

  4. Make the repair

The worn part is replaced with a matching component, and connections are made with new supply lines or seals where appropriate.

  5. Test for leaks

The fixture is tested through several cycles and checked for leaks at every connection before we leave.

Toilet internals, faucet cartridges and shower valves

Inside a toilet tank, the fill valve refills the tank after each flush and shuts off at the correct water level, while the flapper seals the flush valve opening. When the flapper warps or the chain tangles, water leaks into the bowl and the fill valve runs to replace it. A simple dye test, adding a few drops of food coloring to the tank and waiting without flushing, shows whether water is leaking into the bowl. At the base, a wax ring seals the toilet to the drain flange. If the toilet rocks or the flange is damaged, the seal fails and must be replaced along with any flange repair.

Faucets use cartridges, compression stems, ball assemblies or ceramic discs depending on the design. Replacing a worn cartridge with the correct manufacturer part usually stops drips without replacing the faucet. Shower valves in most modern homes use pressure-balancing or thermostatic cartridges to prevent sudden temperature changes. Mineral buildup or worn seals can make these valves stick or allow temperature swings. Servicing or replacing the cartridge restores safe, stable temperatures.

Know where your shutoffs are

Most toilets and sinks have small stop valves on their supply lines. Older stops can seize or leak when turned, so it is worth knowing where your main shutoff is too. If a stop valve will not close or drips when turned, it can be replaced during a repair visit.

Diagnosing bathroom plumbing problems

Bathroom plumbing problems often begin small. A running toilet may be caused by a worn flapper, a misadjusted fill valve or a chain that catches. A toilet that rocks may have a failing wax ring or loose flange bolts, which can allow leaks under the floor.

Faucet drips usually come from worn cartridges, washers or seals. Shower valves can develop drips, temperature fluctuations or difficulty adjusting temperature when cartridges wear or mineral deposits build up. Pressure-balancing valves may need cleaning or replacement to maintain stable temperatures.

Slow drains in sinks and tubs are commonly caused by hair and soap buildup. Drain stoppers and overflow assemblies can collect debris. Leaks under sinks may come from supply connections, drain slip joints or cracked fittings.

Hidden leaks require careful investigation. Stains on ceilings below bathrooms, loose tiles or soft floors can indicate leaks from drains, supply lines or shower pans. Identifying the source prevents damage and mold growth.

Bathroom plumbing mistakes

These habits and repairs often lead to bigger problems.

Ignoring a running toilet

Continuous running can waste significant water and increase bills.

Overtightening fittings

Excessive force can crack fixtures and fittings, creating leaks.

Using the wrong replacement parts

Parts should match the fixture brand and model for proper fit and function.

Caulking over leaks

Covering leaks with caulk may hide the problem while water continues to damage materials underneath.

Waiting on floor stains

Stains or soft floors near toilets and tubs can indicate hidden leaks that worsen over time.

What affects bathroom repair pricing

Fixture brand and parts
Common toilet parts are inexpensive. Brand-specific faucet and shower cartridges vary in cost and availability.
Access
Shower valves behind tile or in tight vanities may require more time or an access panel to reach.
Condition of connections
Corroded stop valves, old supply lines or damaged flanges may need replacing along with the main repair.
Hidden damage
If a leak has damaged the subfloor or wall, those repairs are identified and discussed separately.

Bathroom plumbing questions

How do I know if my toilet is leaking?
Add a few drops of food coloring to the tank and wait 15 to 20 minutes without flushing. If color appears in the bowl, the flapper or flush valve is leaking.
Can a dripping faucet be fixed without replacing it?
Usually. Most drips are caused by a worn cartridge, washer or seat, which can be replaced for far less than a new faucet.
Why does my shower get hot when the toilet is flushed?
Flushing lowers the cold water pressure. A properly working pressure-balance valve compensates, so noticeable swings suggest the cartridge needs service.
Is it worth fixing an old toilet?
Many older toilets can be repaired affordably. If the porcelain is cracked or the toilet uses much more water per flush than modern models, replacement may be the better choice.
What causes low pressure in just one faucet?
A clogged aerator or cartridge is the most common cause. Cleaning or replacing the aerator often restores normal flow.
